Mar. 15–On an unexpectedly beautiful March day, a group of friends did what college students do on spring break: They met for lunch, ducked into the stores of Woodfield Mall, then went for a sushi dinner.
Later, they joined more friends in Chicago’s Chinatown, where they drank cups of tapioca tea and chatted deep into the night.
When it was time to go home, police say, tragedy struck.
About 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, the car carrying three of the friends on their way home to the north suburbs spun out of control on Lower Wacker Drive and smashed into a steel barrier in the median.
The 2004 Mazda RX-8 immediately was engulfed in flames, police said. All three of its occupants were dead at the scene.
